Our family-owned tannery and factory in North India has specialized in leather work for 25+ years. Tanning its own leather to ensure quality and versatility, a core aspect of making footwear, it also supports Chalo’s small batch production values.
OUR TANNERY & FACTORY
All of our products are made at our family-owned tannery and factory based outside of Kanpur, India. Our tannery and factory are Leather Working Group Gold & ISO:9001 certified. Our leathers are Chrome VI and heavy metal free, and our lining leathers are vegetable retanned.
Our CSR efforts support local initiatives across Kanpur, India.

Our 30+ years of expertise and experience allows us bring you the highest quality leather and craftsmanship.
Our products are made in small batches to avoid excess inventory and over-production. The trims and discarded pieces from the production process are used to make components of other small and upcycled products, i.e. pullers, stoppers, and patchwork, which would otherwise end up in landfilled waste.

OUR MAKERS
Our factory exists because of the people who make it happen every day—from working the leather, to crafting the footwear, to keeping the chai flowing. Here’s how we support our craftspeople:
- Scholarships: we support school tuition for some of our employees’ children, and each year we aim to support more and more families and children.
- Fresh Canteen Lunch: we provide subsidized meals made with produce sourced from our own farming and food forest efforts.
OUR PLANET
We operate our tannery and factory with the highest standards. We are Leather Working Group Gold & ISO:9001 certified. Our CSR efforts support projects such as:
- ETF Plants: we only use approved products in the tanning process, and our Effluent Treatment Plants ensure that our water is treated effectively, protecting the environment every step of the way.
- Renewable & Natural Energy: we have our own solar panels to generate renewable energy and minimize our reliance on non-renewable sources. For example, when it comes to drying our leathers, we embrace air-drying and sun-drying methods, wherever possible.
- Food Forest & Organic Agriculture: we have a dedicated Food Forest & Organic Agriculture section on our campus, where we grow a variety of plants, vegetables, and fruits.
- Our Green Area: our tannery and factory sit on a large green area, and we invite every visitor to plant a sapling in our gardens as a small way of giving back.
